(Allen Ginsbergs Gedicht aus dem Jahr 1979 läßt seine Eindrücke von denen des Ruhrgebiets mit denen vom Rhein verschwimmen. Womöglich war es das amerikanische Gefühl für Distanzen, das Ginsberg historische Legenden (Loreley, Rheingold) und zeitgenössische Schlagworte (Stammheim, radioaktiver Abfall) in einen Topf werfen ließ, den er mit Ruhrpott überschrieb. Im Grunde steht “Ruhr-Gebiet” hier für Deutschland – als ruhrspezifisch könnte vielleicht die Eingangszeile “too much industry” durchgehen; selbst die Currywurst wird verallgemeinert zu “too much pork”. Aus heutiger Sicht mag es zudem niedlich erscheinen, daß die Stimmung der Endsiebziger u.a. mit “zuvielen Computern” aufgemacht wird: eine Reaktion auf die Zunahme von Firmenrechnern wie auf die Rasterfahndung.)
